Age of Zombies Review

Age of Zombies is a retro and cute looking twin stick shooter filled with buckets of simple and crude dialogue, complete with random characters with pretty silly names.  In the game you play as Barry Steakfries, a man sent back in time to fight off hordes of zombies created by a mad scientist.

As far as the game play goes, you get everything you would expect from a twin stick shooter.  The action is as fluid as the little animated characters and the blood explosions that appear, as your bullets rip through hordes of undead assailants.
Throughout Age of Zombies, Barry Travels through five different time periods prehistoric era, 1930s America, ancient Egypt, feudal Japan, and the future.  Each period introduces its own unique enemies, is complimented by lovely scenery and has it's own unique and typically huge boss.

The one thing that Age of Zombies has that wins favour, is that sprites look great and the characters are well rendered.   All of the artwork is wonderful and retro, plus the sheer number of enemies on screen is simply incredible.
However while that is a positive sadly the other aspects of the game prevent it from being a great shooter and leave it simply at the average mark.  The first of these is Barry himself, who spouts witty and crude dialogue throughout the campaign, his ego knowing no bounds.  While a lot of this is funny his constant references to different games, films and time periods does get a little dull after a while.

The weapons in the game are also pretty bog standard and are exactly what you would expect from a conventional shooter.  The boss battles are also not really challenging or too dissimilar to each other.  They all have a pattern and are supported by their hordes of undead, providing no real challenge to the average gamer.

While the game is rather cheap, I completed it first time in under an hour.  I have no problem for a game being short, but if it was harder the game could have lasted much longer.  As it stands Age of Zombies is too easy and while this makes it assessable it fails to love up to the games it is trying to emulate.
If you are a fan of your twin stick shooters and do not mind walking through a game without a sweat, I would suggest downloadingAge of Zombies.  Failing that it is worth a download just for the brilliant art.

But if you were expecting it to be something new and different, I would personally give this game a miss.
